The present experimental work was designed to investigation the degree of susceptibility of the snail, Lymnaea cubensis, and of the intrasnail larval stages of E. hepatica to infection by N. algerae, a microsporidian pathogen originally describe in mosquitoes. A second objective was to measure the nfluence of F. hepatica infection on the susceptibility of L. cubensis to the microsporidian infection In this connection, a modified method for laboratory colonization of L. cubensis was developed and evaluated, based on snail mortality and metacercariae production. Because the snail colony was formed with snails originally collected from two georgraphic areas in Florida, the susceptibility of these snails to F. hepatica was also compared. |
